Caste among the managerial elite – graduates of foreign and domestic MBA schools – is a very conditional phenomenon. Because there is no answer to the question: what is more important – training according to Western standards or taking into account the Ukrainian realities of business

MBA in an embroidered shirt

Most of our compatriots respectfully roll their eyes to the sky when they hear about those who managed to get an MBA “there” in one of the ten most famous business schools. The minority snorts contemptuously and assures that our education is not inferior to the “bourgeois” because it is not separated from the native chernozems.

But one way or another, the attitude towards certified managers, both among their potential employers and among those wishing to receive business education, has already been formed. “It used to be fashionable for MBAs, this degree was awarded to rare specialists. Now it can be done by almost anyone, and the variety of programs contributes to this,” said Vitaly Mikhailov, head of the recruitment company World Staff (staff – 20 people).

Now, according to representatives of business schools, the demand for inexpensive medium-term and short programs is growing, while those wishing to take a course designed for several years and including foreign internships, has become 5-10% less than in the pre- crisis period, when business schools even had to compile a “waiting list” of those in a hurry to join the knowledge.

For myself

“MBA graduates have one major drawback – they ask for too much salary,” some directors respond succinctly. Embyomists are not spared for excessive ambition. MBA education often speaks of “innovation and exclusivity” thus fostering high self-esteem in some psychologically weak executives, so the “stardom” of some MBA graduates prevents them from finding a decent job. The number of diplomas cannot always compete with real “hard” life experience, says Vladimir Pavelko, director of MBA programs at kmbs.

However, it should be noted that most employers are quite formal about the presence of this diploma. “At SCM, an MBA degree is not a requirement even for management positions. When choosing a candidate for the position of top manager, we first look at how experienced the candidate is in a particular field. And an MBA degree is an additional but not a key advantage. ” – says Anna Terekhova, press secretary of “System Capital Management” (management company, staff – more than 80 people).

Although, other things being equal, according to Vitaly Mikhailov, a candidate with an MBA degree will most likely be preferred. “At least because he will no longer ask for money for education,” joked Mr. Mikhailov, who is himself a 2002 MIM graduate. At the same time, Mr. Mikhailov argues that two graduates with a diploma from the same school can be very different principals, and therefore each candidacy for the position of top manager requires the most careful consideration. “Everything depends on the person, not on the diploma” – Nikolay Tkachenko, the director of KP “Vasilkovraykommunkhoz” (export and utilization of waste), the graduate of IBR of the Institute of the international business relations considers. “Good theoretical knowledge should be accompanied by practical experience. I would rely on it when choosing candidates for my company” – says Vadim Nesterchuk, CEO of Sixt Ukraine (rental, car leasing, assistance, staff – about 200 people).

Therefore, most MBA graduates and students have no illusions that their lives will magically change with the coveted diploma. However, none of the MBA graduates interviewed by VD correspondents regretted the time or money spent. “MBA helps to systematize the experience, forms a holistic perception of business processes and allows the head to speak in one language with representatives of various departments or divisions” – said Yuri Klitsky, head of the Ukrainian office of YPK Enterprises Ltd (chemical products) …

At the same time, in addition to moral satisfaction and self-confidence, a master’s degree in management can give quite a tangible material effect. Thus, according to Nikolai Tkachenko, thanks to the use of the acquired knowledge and skills in the development of his own enterprise, he managed to recoup the cost of training in about a year. However, the choice of business school also affects how effective the training will be.

Know ours

Getting a business education at Ivy League universities remains a cherished dream of many of our compatriots, which is often hindered by lack of funds and lack of knowledge of English. However, some of our managers are quite consciously https://123helpme.me/animal-farm/ choosing to study in domestic business schools. They motivate this decision by the fact that Ukrainian realities differ significantly from Western ones. “National specifics are an indisputable proven competitive advantage. For example, well-known companies, coming to Ukraine with successful (for their market) expats and well-established business processes in the strategy portfolio,” trample “on the spot for years without real development of their business and in The peculiarities of doing business in our country are known to everyone who actually does it: it is the mentality, transparency and lack of a key idea of building a business in the vast majority of companies, so the brilliant strategies and marketing moves applicable in one country. And even a well-trained professional with the latest methodologies and tools of doing business will not succeed without a good understanding of the local market and corporate characteristics of the country as a whole and some sectors of the economy, “said Vladimir Pavelko.

Another important advantage of domestic MBA programs is that Ukrainian schools offer in-service programs. In addition, the reputation of the school and the teaching staff play an important role in attracting students.

As Mr. Nesterchuk noted, “any business school relies on teachers who are known in their field, who can broadcast their experience and whom you want to quote.” However, it should be noted that almost all MBA programs offered by Ukrainian business schools were developed in conjunction with foreign universities or according to their standards. And foreign specialists are invited to read individual courses. That is why domestic business schools successfully use proven forms of education, filling them with their own content. The best form of “testing” the acquired knowledge is the case method, and we not only write cases based on Ukrainian companies and their realities, but also conduct unique “live” cases directly at companies with the participation of their owners and top management. The heads of enterprises are asking to “disassemble them to pieces” to prepare and conduct a “live” case on their basis. Among such applicants are not only domestic market leaders, but also world-renowned enterprises that have made acquisitions on the Ukrainian market, “said Vladimir Pavelko.

At the same time, according to Vadim Nesterchuk, who studied at both Ukrainian and business schools in London, it is in our country that communication between graduates is more lively and informal. “It is easier for us to go to school to find a partner or to solve a problem. In Western schools, this communication is more formal, but it is actively supported at the official level – regular mailings are made, alumni communities are formed, “said Mr. Nesterchuk.

Well, for those who still want to get an education by Western standards, but do not have sufficient financial resources, as well as the opportunity to devote a couple of years of his life exclusively to training, there are various options to combine pleasant with useful …
