If you want to book a hotel room, there are numerous ways to find out more in online booking portals. But the diversity does not necessarily ensure transparency.

It has never been easier to book accommodation. Travelers can find suitable offers on Internet platforms with little search effort. In addition to personal recommendations and star ratings, online customer ratings are one of the most important guidelines.

Portals defend themselves against fake hotel reviews

According to the German Hotel Association (IHA), around half of the travelers look at guest opinions on the Internet before booking. However, among the many reliable reviews there are also numerous attempts at forgery or fraud.

Ten tips: How to get the best room in the hotel Real or fake ?: How to recognize fake hotel reviews WiFi, bed tax, breakfast: This is how hotels collect extra

In contrast to open portals such as Holidaycheck, Google or Tripadvisor, Booking.com, HRS and Expedia only allow reviews from confirmed hotel guests. “Only those who have booked and actually traveled can evaluate,” explains HRS spokeswoman Britta Schumacher. A stay with Expedia is also a requirement. “This is how we prevent fake hotel reviews from being posted,” says PR manager Svetlana Hirth.

ISO standard for credibility

To make individual ratings more trustworthy, an international ISO standard was published in June 2018. “The new ISO standard is intended to increase the credibility of platforms,” says Markus Luthe, General Manager at the hotel association. It is not yet clear which portals will be officially certified. But Luthe assumes that the major booking and rating platforms will comply with the agreed standards in the future.

Luthe sees a supplement to the online reviews in hotel stars that have been standardized by the German Hotel and Restaurant Association (Dehoga). The star classification of the Hotelstars Union, which is now valid in 15 European countries, developed from the system.

Unmask star cheaters

Around 40 percent of all hotels in Germany are rated according to Dehoga criteria. But by no means every hotel that adorns itself with stars can, according to Luthe’s experience, show a valid classification. Hotels that advertise this illegally have been able to be tracked down with special software for some time.

Around 25,000 hotel websites are regularly and automatically checked for unauthorized star advertising. 1,300 suspected cases were followed up in 2017 alone. But in the meantime the number of star cheaters has fallen noticeably and continuously, according to Luthe. In cases of doubt, guests can check the authenticity of the stars at www.hotelstars.eu.

On online booking platforms, however, the hotels are classified with so-called portal stars, which are assigned according to their own standards and are intended to enable global comparisons.

Inquire directly at the hotel

However, Sabine Fischer-Volk from the Brandenburg Consumer Center sees little opportunity in stars, seals of approval and certifications to create sufficient transparency for consumers: “It is an open secret that customer ratings are partially faked. But stars and certificates only describe and say a state of the past little about whether the specified standard is always available. “

The consumer advocate warns not to derive too high expectations from the classifications. She advises those who attach particular importance to certain offers should inquire directly at the hotel.

Trick: “Ranking booster”

Location, equipment, type of accommodation – a large number of filters make it possible to sort the hotel offer in the booking portals according to personal preferences. How the hotels are ultimately listed depends on numerous criteria. At HRS, there should be more than 80 factors that influence it.

However, not all criteria are objective. “Ranking booster” is the name of a tool that gives hotels a better ranking in the HRS selection list or ensures more visibility. Hotels pay the booking platform a higher commission for this. Instead of the usual 15 percent, 18 percent or more would be paid, Schumacher confirms.

“Hoteliers in metropolitan areas use this option, especially in periods of low capacity utilization or as a promotion,” explains the HRS spokeswoman. For a top place in the ranking, however, further criteria would have to be met.

You should pay attention to this information

Symbols such as “thumbs up” should be questioned by vacationers: at booking.com, for example, these indicate that a hotel may have paid more money to the portal. (Source: Andrea Warnecke / dpa-tmn)

It is generally worth taking a closer look. Because the corresponding offers are only marked with a subtle gray line and the note “Promo” at HRS. But this means that HRS is still more transparent than the competition, says Schumacher.

In fact, there are no notes in Expedia’s hotel list that point to promotions. Only in the area of customer service is there a comment on the sorting order: “The compensation that a hotel pays us for bookings via our website also plays a role in the relative listing of hotels with similar offers.”

At booking.com, accommodations that are among the preferred partners and are displayed as top tips are marked with a “thumbs-up” symbol.
